A Kurtzman dozen

Harvey Kurtzman's great humor pages, HEY LOOK!, were reprinted in a fine volume from Kitchen Sink Press in 1992. The pages had originally appeared at random in various comic books issued by Marvel in the late 1940s, edited by Stan Lee. The name and issue number of the comic each strip originally appeared in is on the left of the artwork.

  1. HGE: Great Kurtzman! If I could select one piece of orginal art from a comic book artist, I think it would be Kurtzman from his EC days. The Hey Look stuff is just so brilliant as well. Nearly Haiku in their concise expression.

I have an apology to make, however, sir. You were kind enough to comment on my Hercules post on the Big Blog, and I meant to post it but stupidly "rejected" it by mistake. I wasn't wearing my glasses and clicked the wrong option (am I the only one that does this?). Anyway, I would love it if you could make the same observation again, if desired.

  2. No apologies necessary. I wish I could have back all of the wrong buttons I've pushed in my life...both figuratively and literally.

Kurtzman's weird humor was certainly interesting. I don't remember anyone else doing the kinds of jokes he was doing in Hey Look. Some of it was absurdist humor, probably over the heads of many young readers. Stan Lee should probably get thanks for originally publishing these unusual comic strips, setting the stage for what was to follow.
